The Ultimate Guide to Dermal Filler treatments.
Over time, our faces begin to be impacted by wrinkles, folds, lines and depressions. Sometimes, it feels like they’re out of our control or our faces lack volume. One solution for many people is dermal fillers. This treatment is excellent at adding volume to areas of your face and filling lines where wrinkles have developed.
Our ultimate guide provides everything you need to know about dermal fillers and answers some of the commonly asked questions from our dermatology clinic in Southampton.
Dermal Filler FAQs.
What are Dermal Fillers and what are they made of?
Fillers were first introduced around over 40 years ago, but have changed considerably over the years.
Also known as face and lip filler, this injectable treatment adds volume by filling in fine lines and wrinkles. They’re not a permanent solution to combat the signs of ageing but they are very effective at creating a more youthful look.
Dermal fillers use a natural substance called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule that the body produces.
This chemical is completely safe and acts as a humectant to draw moisture into the skin. It keeps our body plump, hydrated, and healthy. However, due to time and environmental factors, our body naturally reduces the amount of Hyaluronic Acid it produces over time.
How long do Dermal Fillers last?
The length of time dermal fillers last is dependant on a few factors, including what type of filler is used, the area being treated and the volume of filler being used.
Typically, they will last anywhere between 6 to 18 months depending on the above. Our dermatology professionals will be able to provide a more accurate timeline at your first consultation, after determining your exact treatment.

Are Dermal Fillers permanent?
Before any treatment, it’s important to know all of your options and the permanency of the treatment you’re having. Especially if you are considering a surgical treatment to ease the signs of ageing and wrinkles, a non invasive treatment like dermal fillers is certainly worth a try first.
With regards to dermal fillers they are not a permanent treatment and require return treatments to maintain your desired look.

How long until I see results from my treatment?
Dermal fillers are known for their fast-acting results. You can expect to see the “final result” anywhere from 7 to 10 days following your treatment. This will be when any treatment-related swelling or bruising lessens and the treated area returns to its natural form and elasticity.
How can I make my results last longer?
Although fillers are not a permanent solution, there are some things you can do to maintain your look and make them last longer. Some of the things you can do include:
Eat a balanced diet: Eating well does wonders to combat the signs of ageing. It can also help to keep your filler for longer. Unhealthy processed food causes inflammation which causes the injection to metabolise quicker.
Manage your exercise: Maybe the only time you will be discouraged from exercising too much is with dermal fillers. Still keep your usual exercise routine, it is just important to know that the more calories you burn the quicker you will need a top up.
Look after your skin with a skincare routine: Keeping your skin hydrated and protected can also help to improve the results of your fillers. Wearing sunscreen and blocking UV sun rays can help to maintain your filler. We have a wide range of skincare products that our dermatologists can advise on.

Do Dermal Fillers hurt?
Although people often feel a slight discomfort with injections in general, having fillers injected is much less painful than many expect. The comfort of the treatment is often determined by the application technique.
Our experienced dermatologists have a vast amount of experience in the medical industry giving us the confidence to perform treatments in a comfortable way for our clients.
Although there is minimal discomfort for this treatment, local anaesthetic is available in the form of anaesthetic cream.

Are Dermal Fillers safe?
This treatment is extremely popular and performed across the world on a daily if not hourly basis. Fillers are considered very safe by dermatologists, however there are occasionally side effects for some people.
Before we perform any treatment, we have a full medical consultation with you. This is to determine whether the treatment will present any issues and to find the most suitable procedure for your desired result. Our experienced team of medical practitioners in Southampton will never recommend a treatment that would not be safe for you.

Are there any side effects of Dermal Fillers?
Side effects from injectable treatments commonly occur around the site of the injection. Some of the side effects that can be expected from using dermal fillers include:
Bruising
Swelling
Redness
Tenderness
Before any treatment we will have a consultation with you to discuss your medical history and recommend the best treatment for you. If we believe that you may react more severely than the side effects mentioned above, we will not recommend that treatment for you.

How long is recovery from Dermal Fillers?
Side effects often reduce to nothing within the first seven days after treatment. Many clients do not experience side effects, and those that do they are often very mild and manageable.
We would encourage clients to avoid big events or strenuous activity for up to a week after having fillers.
Can Dermal Fillers be removed?
Yes! One of the benefits of dermal fillers are that they can be removed with another injectable treatment known as Hyaluronidase or Hyalase.
If you change your mind and want to reverse the effects of filler, we can inject Hyalase into the area that was treated. This is also common for many people and just as safe as the fillers themselves.
How often will I need to 'top up' my fillers?
Although topping up your filler is recommended, the time in between treatments varies between people. Usually, people wait on average around 4 to 6 months before a top up. If you were to wait a full 12 to 18 months for a top up, your treated area is likely to have returned to its original state.
How much do Dermal Fillers cost?
We offer lip flips for £195, all the way up to £300 for 1ml of filler in your chosen area. Our dermatologists will be able to provide an accurate cost following a full consultation to understand your desired goals.

Aftercare for Dermal Fillers
There are a number of things you can do at home to reduce the common side effects of dermal fillers. Some of the top aftercare tips from our dermatologists include:
Apply a wrapped cold compress to the treated area (not directly on skin) for 10 minutes every half an hour as soon as possible following treatment.
Avoid activities that involve high intensity or heat for over 24 hours. This includes things like strenuous exercise, spas, saunas and hot showers, etc.
Don’t apply pressure to the area for the first 48 hours. This includes sleeping on your back if possible, and not rubbing the treated area.
Resist massaging the treated area unless instructed to do so by a medical professional.
Apply Bepanthen or Arnica cream three times/day for the next 7 days. This will soothe any tenderness or discomfort and prevent effects from worsening.
Avoid consuming alcohol for 24 hours. For best results we recommend steering clear of alcohol one week prior to and one week following your treatment.
Avoid products with active cosmeceutical properties, for example, AHAs, retinols, and vitamin C.
Avoid oil based makeup for 24 hours.
Further skin treatments around the affected area should be avoided for at least 2 weeks after treatment. This includes waxing, chemical peels, facials, skin needling, microdermabrasion, or any laser treatments.
